Live From St. John

We're coming to you live today for the first time here at Benjamin's bedside, where the hairdos are messy and the diapers are even messier. I consider making it through 28 years of life without changing a diaper to be quite an accomplishment, but the streak has come to an end. It is said that some people have a sixth sense; as for me, I've got about three and a half. My selective hearing has had its benefits throughout my life, and now I've found that my almost total lack of a sense of smell has also started to come in handy. Even the most toxic looking diaper is no match for my newfound superpower. I hear they get much worse in the next few months so I'll let you know whether father or son wins out. Round one goes to the Senseless Wonder.

The snow and ice have been coming down here pretty well over the last day or two, and anytime we get over an eighth of an inch of ice in Tulsa, the entire city shuts down for three days. Thankfully, Chris and Linda Jones have extended their hospitality to us and allowed us to stay in their home, which is just down the street from the hospital, until the weather improves - yet another example of how great our church family is.

One more large machine has been rolled out of the room. This time it was Ben's other ventilator. That's right, Ben is breathing on his own through his trach pipe now! I can't tell you how happy I am about this. God is healing Benjamin must faster than any of us could have imagined. We can now do more of the fun stuff that other parents get to do. I held Ben in my arms for the first time. I'd show you the pictures of this, but they are trapped on my camera since my USB transfer cable is on the other side of town. Technology has a long way to go to overcome all of man's stupidity.

Ben is also off all of his medications except for some antibiotics to fight off a staph infection that is developing in the area of his tracheotomy. We'd love your prayers that this will not turn into a serious problem.

My new most favorite thing in the world: singing my boy to sleep with great songs like Blue Skies and Rainbows. My new least favorite thing in the world: watching Ben cry with no sound coming out. You would think that a baby crying on mute would be great, but it's actually scary to watch. It's good that I can use my most favorite thing to fight against my least favorite thing. I suppose God works the same way. He uses his greatest gifts, love and hope, to drive selfishness and fear out of our lives.

I'm going to get out of here soon before the next round of snow and ice hits, but I hope to get you those pictures as soon as the weather clears up. This is Whit, Adrienne, and Benjamin signing off from St. John Medical Center.

WOW! What wonderful news!!! We are rejoicing over the three of you and praising God for His healing! Even without photos, the pictures in my mind as you describing singing your son to sleep are priceless! Thank you so much for allowing us to walk this journey with you guys. We are all growing in our faith through your experiences. We love you guys so much and we will continue praying just as intensely as we have all along, especially focusing on the current staff infection issue. Give that sweet boy a hug and a kiss, and sing one more verse for us!

Dearest Adrienne,

My darling child I have just managed to get on to the site with my old bush computor and am just overwhelmed.
Knowing that you were going through this so far away from us was bad.....but "watching" it now through Whit's amazing reports is making you feel so much closer.

Your Whit is obviously an lovely, gentle person........just as you are.
I have never met him - but can so see now why you and him are together.
Having him next to you and Benjamin must be so incredibly comforting through this sad time.
His sense of humour is so encouraging and he sounds like an amazing companion to you, and a fantastic father to Benjamin.

He's right when he says you look like his "Mona Lisa".

If ever there was someone that had a lovely relationship with God it is you and Kay and Noel - so I KNOW that God is listening.

I once heard someone say that when the sun's rays shine down out of the clouds - it looks like God's fingers coming down.

I now imagine pictures of all the prayers from people all around the world going "up in fingers" for you 3.

Please know that Ian,Kat and I are thinking and praying for you all the time and I now jump on the net first thing in the morning to get an update.

Huge loves
Michele

It's really nice to hear someone talking about Tulsa. Just thought I'd tell you that your posts are a blessing to me because of what God is doing there, and because they make me feel a little closer to home. I am currently AIMing in Albania, but I'm from Bartlesville originally. Our team worked at Memorial Drive for a week last April, which was a huge blessing. You are truly an encouragment! Your sense of humor and optimism in your time of trouble is amazing. We're praying, here, that God continues to bless you with positive news, and that He gives you strength to continue.
God Bless!

I just wanted to let you know that I am praying for Ben daily! I am a friend of a friend of yours "Debbie" and she asked me to remember you all in prayers daily and I have been faithfully. What a blessing to see God's hand in Ben's life. The photos are so hard to look at b/c I too have a baby and it hits close to home, but I try and remember God cares even more for our little ones than we do!! God bless you all & I can't wait to hear about Ben getting to go home!!!

In Christ, Dawn
